About ByrdNest PT

  • Comprehensive one-on-one session with a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy

  • Client sees the same therapist every time

  • Shared decision-making between the client and the therapist, i.e. treatment is not dictated by just the therapist, and it is not dictated by the insurance company

  • You will feel heard when you share your concerns

  • I will always advocate for you, whether it be with your doctor or another provider

  • More effective treatment with better and faster outcomes

  • 1-2 times a week instead of 2-3 times a week

  • Sessions are typically 60 minutes but may be shorter or longer depending on what the client needs

  • Therapist is more accessible to client, you can call, text, or email me any time

  • More convenient to the client, as time spent driving to the clinic and waiting in the clinic are eliminated

  • More flexible scheduling options

  • Work in the comfort of your own home

  • Holistic approach focusing on both 1) reducing symptoms and 2) creating and maintaining good health and healing (salutogenic model), rather than the traditional pathogenic model focusing only on fixing the symptoms after the fact, and finding the causes and consequences of disease. Yes, we try to reduce symptoms, but we also promote daily self-care and other positive activities that sustain us and protect us from the crises.

At ByrdNest PT, we eliminate these all-too-common situations:

  • Therapist treating 2-4 patients per hour

  • Client spends only a portion of the session with the therapist

  • Therapist is not given time for documentation so they are pressured to document on their computer or tablet during your session

  • Therapist delegates your care to a Physical Therapy Assistant or Physical Therapy Aide

  • Answering the same questions multiple times with each therapist that you work with

  • Therapist tells you to “warm up on the bike” so they can finish with the previous patient

  • Patients are told to attend 3 times a week, which is expensive and time-consuming

  • Patients often perform the exact same exercises for several sessions without progression

  • Patients are often performing their exercises alone, unsupervised, with no feedback from the treating therapist. A few sessions down the road, the therapist supervises the patient and corrects their technique, and the patient is left wondering if they’ve been doing it incorrectly this whole time

  • Patient often feels rushed and not listened-to

  • Patient must fill out lengthy and redundant paperwork

Mission

My mission is to empower older adults and build their confidence in their ability to stay strong all life long, while encouraging FUN and providing a supportive COMMUNITY. I want to be just one of the team players on YOUR TEAM, with my #1 goal of serving you to help you achieve YOUR goals. I create a safe environment to share experiences and learn from each other. I value teamwork, honesty, dependability, integrity, hard work, and simplicity.

Vision

My vision is that the older adults of Central Florida would be equipped with the information they need to confidently manage their health, make informed decisions, and drastically reduce the number of preventable falls that occur. I envision the current aging population having the resources they need to find answers and have peace of mind during this season of life.

About Amber

I’m Amber, a native Floridian and graduate of the University of Florida. I earned my Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Boston University in 2013. I’ve worked in almost every setting including outpatient, hospital, inpatient rehab, skilled nursing, and home health. Most recently, my job in inpatient rehab was focused on intensive treatment after orthopedic injuries and surgeries (post-fall recovery, total joint replacement, spinal fusion), neurological events (spinal cord injury, stroke, Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis), amputation, and cardiopulmonary conditions.

My favorite thing about being a therapist is helping people do things they didn’t think they could do and seeing their confidence in their walking and balance grow every day! As an athlete, teamwork is ingrained in me. You and I work as a team to achieve YOUR goals. I collaborate with health care providers, and professionals in the construction and home safety industry, to be part of our team when needed.

For most of my career, I've worked with older adults. I've become passionate about balance training and teaching people how to prevent falls so they can continue moving and living how they want as long as possible. I became a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) to help people accomplish this goal. By combining my physical therapy expertise with Universal Design principles, I bring a valuable perspective when I look at you and your home.

In my free time you can find me hiking on the Florida trails, playing piano, cooking, and speaking Spanish every chance I get!

ByrdNest PT is named after my grandma Tommie Byrd Martin Steckel who I was named after but never got the chance to meet. She was a home-maker, gardener, an amazing cook, and a great wife and mother of three.
